As your machine gets older one issue you may have is caused by a little piece of plastic called a jump motor cushion. The problem presents itself when:
the needle bar does not retract after a trim
the thread hook catches the presser foot
The photos below show where the part is and what it takes to replace it.
Part #23 is the jump motor cushion shown in the diagram below and the real part is pictured to the right. -
